BTESA Drives Digital Transformation in the Oil & Gas Industry with IoT

BTESA, in collaboration with CEPSA, has carried out an innovative IoT (Internet of Things) project for monitoring industrial conditions in critical environments. Deployed at the San Roque Refinery (Algeciras), this system has enabled CEPSA to significantly improve its analytics and predictive maintenance capabilities, reducing operational costs and strengthening security and control over its infrastructure.

CEPSA’s goal was to have a system capable of wirelessly managing sensors, monitoring their health status, and reporting metrics to its existing data management systems.

What were the challenges?

  1. Complex environment: The radio frequency propagation was hindered by the large number of pipes and metal structures at the plant.
  2. Strict requirements for sensors: The sensors had to comply with the ATEX regulations, which govern the use of equipment in explosive risk areas.
  3. Accessibility and scalability: Create a flexible onboarding platform to incorporate new sensors in the future.

To tackle these three challenges, it was necessary to bring together, on one hand, radiofrequency experts to study the network at a physical level, on the other hand, systems engineers to evaluate available sensors and size the network, and lastly, software developers capable of creating a user-friendly interface and a customizable, scalable platform for the future.

How did we achieve this?

BTESA has the best team of radiofrequency experts in Spain, holds a extensive experience in monitoring solutions and IoT communications, and is capable of designing software tailored to the client’s needs. Additionally, BTESA has deployed communication networks in the most complex environments worldwide.

BTESA’s multidisciplinary approach, combining its radiofrequency, system engineering, and software departments, effectively addressed these challenges, designing and implementing a scalable solution with LoRaWAN technology, which is secure and adaptable to multiple industrial use cases.

What’s next?

With this project, BTESA reaffirms its commitment to innovation in the telecommunications and industrial IoT sectors, providing technological solutions that enable companies like CEPSA to optimize resources, reduce operational costs, and strengthen security and control in critical infrastructures.

Our next step is to continue expanding the sensor network into other critical areas, integrating more emerging technologies such as artificial intelligence and big data analysis to keep innovating and improving our operations.
