Project Description

In a strategic move to modernize broadcasting infrastructure and deliver superior audio quality to listeners, BTESA has unveiled a comprehensive turnkey project for the implementation of DAB+ (Digital Audio Broadcasting Plus) technology across the Balearic Islands. Commissioned by a leading Spanish national telecommunications infrastructure and services operator, this project encompasses the supply, installation, configuration, commissioning, and training of an entire DAB+ digital radio system. The new DAB+ broadcasting system will not only enhance sound quality and coverage but also increase spectrum efficiency. 

The project was executed in multiple phases: 

  • Project study and design: assessment of the region’s specific requirements and design of an optimized DAB+ network. 
  • Infrastructure installation: deployment of transmitters, antenna, and headend equipment for DAB+ broadcasting. 
  • Configuration and testing: system setup and comprehensive testing to ensure optimal transmission quality. 
  • Commissioning: final configuration and activation of the systems to start DAB+ transmissions, ensuring correct operation. 
  • Training: Instruction for technical personnel on the usage and maintenance of the new system. 
  • Ongoing Support: Provision of continuous technical support and updates to ensure long-term operability. 

BTESA, leveraging its extensive expertise as an integrator of telecommunications systems, designed a customized solution tailored to the client’s needs. Drawing on our experience with various manufacturers, we selected the headend equipment that best met the specifications, while also incorporating additional technical advantages. BTESA’s high-efficiency Doherty transmitters, configured in a 1+1 redundancy setup, have endowed the network with full redundancy through the availability of dual inputs (2x EDI) and seamless switching. 

Key components of the project include: 

  • Contribution: contribution network from the studios to the headend. 
  • Compression and multiplexing: MPEG-4 HE-AAC v2 compression and multiplexing, with capabilities to insert dynamic images and texts. 
  • Distribution: a cross-redundant signal distribution system to the exciters. 
  • Broadcasting: transmitters in a 1+1 redundant configuration, along with feeder and antenna systems. 

With this project, BTESA reaffirms its commitment to innovation and technological development, contributing to the implementation of this new standard in digital broadcasting in Spain.
